Trust, without the maple-leaf fog

What “Canadian” means on Trendsly.

A Canadian-founded or Canadian-based brand is not automatically Canadian-owned today or Canadian-made. Trendsly keeps those ideas separate, links the evidence we have, and says plainly when manufacturing is unknown.

The short version

Three different facts

These labels answer different questions. One never stands in for another.

Canadian-founded
Started in Canada; not proof of who owns it today.
Canadian-owned
Shown only when current ownership is supported by reliable evidence.
Made in Canada
Shown only for the exact product, collection, or brand scope supported by reviewed evidence.

Canadian-based brands and Canadian retailers are labelled separately.

01

Verified Canadian directory

A “Canadian-founded” label requires an official first-party source that describes a Canadian founding or origin. A separate “Canadian-based” label requires first-party evidence of a current Canadian operation when the source does not establish a Canadian founding. Neither label claims present ownership or where every product is made.

  • Brand names are normalized to avoid accidental matches.
  • The label includes a visible manufacturing disclaimer.
  • Every eligible entry links to its supporting evidence.
  • Legacy and uncertain entries remain ineligible rather than being upgraded by guesswork.

02

Labels, makers, and retailers

The directory identifies what an entry actually is. A fashion label, Canadian manufacturer, hybrid brand-retailer, and Canadian retailer can all be useful, but they are not interchangeable.

Canadian-based entries require first-party evidence of a Canadian operation. They are labelled separately when the source does not establish a Canadian founding.

03

Current ownership

Trendsly verifies current ownership only when reliable evidence directly supports it. A Canadian founding story alone is not proof of who owns the company today.

Broad Canadian-ownership search and filtering are not available yet. If a search specifically asks for Canadian-owned brands, Trendsly returns an honest unsupported state instead of substituting Canadian-founded results.

04

Manufacturing claims

“Made in Canada” appears only when reviewed evidence supports the stated brand, collection, or item scope. A brand’s headquarters, design studio, shipping address, or founding story is not enough, and shoppers should still confirm individual product details.

If manufacturing origin is missing or unclear, Trendsly says it is not verified and leaves the badge off.

05

Brand Lens assessments

Brand Lens gives each category its own score and explanation. Price, environmental evidence, Canadian production, disclosure and size breadth answer different questions. There is no overall brand score.

  • Price position compares current in-stock CAD prices within product categories. Category percentiles use a product-count-weighted median so a one-product side category cannot carry the same influence as a brand’s main assortment. Publication requires at least eight valid prices, 80% price coverage and an eight-brand peer set; the result describes price, not quality or value. Retained catalogue links may be first-party brand pages or retailer pages and do not imply official-brand ownership.
  • Environmental source review reflects documented actions involving materials, circularity, production and reporting. Each level links to reviewed claims with dates and scope. Targets are identified as targets; levels describe the breadth of evidence, not measured environmental impact.
  • Canadian production reports the exact reviewed brand, collection, or product scope; broader levels include only narrower claims they truthfully contain.
  • Manufacturing disclosure depth ranges from product details to operations, supplier information and formal reporting. The cited sources support the level shown. Older reports retain their date and lower confidence; a named retailer product page supports only that item.
  • Size range measures recurring current size-option breadth within a comparable apparel, footwear, intimates or kids’ scope. At least three distinct products must support a published level; fit quality and inclusivity are separate questions.

Every reviewed profile has an explicit outcome for every category, with sources and confidence. Zero marks an evidence gap and carries no quality judgement. Non-applicable assortments are labelled separately. Evidence gaps do not enter refinement groups.

06

Community reviews

Community reviews describe first-hand product experiences. They are separate from Brand Lens, which describes reviewed evidence and catalogue outcomes, and separate from the older one-tap star totals. Trendsly does not turn a retailer visit into a verified purchase or import third-party reviews as if they were submitted here.

  • Every new or edited review enters the same relevance and safety queue. Moderators may publish or reject for spam, duplication, personal information, unsupported allegations, conflicts of interest, or content unrelated to a product experience. Positive and negative sentiment are held to the same rules.
  • Individual experiences may appear immediately after moderation, but an average and rating distribution appear only after five published reviews. Detailed dimension averages require ten valid responses for that dimension.
  • A confidence-adjusted community signal becomes analytically eligible only after 25 published reviews from at least 15 distinct contributors. It is kept separate from public search ranking during the launch period so a small or coordinated sample cannot silently reorder brands.
  • Purchase-verification labels state only what Trendsly can substantiate. Incentivized reviews must be disclosed and remain visible under the same publication rules.

Review structured data is emitted only when the five-review public aggregate exists, and it describes the same approved review content visible on the page. Empty profiles invite a first contribution without showing a false zero, fabricated testimonial, or synthetic average.

07

Prices and availability

Prices, sizes, images, sale status, shipping, and availability originate with retailers and can change between catalogue checks.

  • Trendsly displays catalogue freshness when it is known.
  • Prices stay in the retailer's published currency. CAD thresholds apply only to CAD-priced products, and price sorting groups currencies instead of comparing unlike face values.
  • The retailer page is always the final source of truth.
  • Broken or stale products can be reported for review.

08

Search ranking

Results are ranked by similarity to the words and images in a search, then refined by explicit filters. Trendsly does not currently sell sponsored placement.

Canadian-founded and Canadian-based labels help people understand a result; they do not silently override an exact search or guarantee current ownership or where a product was made.

09

Image privacy

An uploaded outfit first receives a request-scoped detector pass. Detector regions, confidence scores, and signed request context remain transient. Your browser then crops the detected or manually selected region locally; only that crop—or the whole image when you explicitly choose it—is sent to search.

Private temporary files are removed when each request finishes, including failed requests. Product analytics do not store uploaded image bytes, image hashes, crop boxes, detector regions, confidence scores, or detector context. Images are not used to create public profiles.

Text searches stay in the page URL so a search can be shared and may therefore appear in browser history. Images are never added to shared URLs.

Saved products, watchlists, and owned-item markers remain in the browser on the current device unless a future account feature is explicitly enabled.

10

Help improve the catalogue

Canadian fashion data is messy, and honest correction is part of the product. Suggestions enter a visible research queue, but only verified entries reach the directory.
